What is a patellar dislocation?
Patellar dislocation describes the kneecap jumping out of its intended position in the knee joint.
In a healthy state, the kneecap glides smoothly and securely in its designated groove. However, in affected dogs, this structure is often not optimally developed or stabilizing factors are lacking. As a result, the kneecap can slip inwards or outwards.
Depending on the severity, this happens only occasionally or permanently. Especially in early stages, the kneecap often pops back into place on its own – which is why many owners don’t initially recognize the problem as a serious condition.
